The basic rules for residential pool fencing are:

 

1 - All domestic swimming and spa pools with a depth of 400mm or more must be fenced to at least 1200mm above ground level

 

2 - Gates must open outwards, latch automatically and be self-closing

 

3 - The fence must not have any features that would allow a child to climb over it

 

4 - If a new fence is to be installed a Building consent is required

 

5 - The homeowner is responsible for ensuring all fencing is installed and maintained to meet the requirements of the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987
